I met up with the builders today. There are five of them and they work as a great team. Why do they work so well?
On the face of it I could see that they have a leader who is definitely the boss and who is very competent and the workers are skilled at their bit, are good workers and do what they are asked. And they enjoy working together and do a good job.
I come across lots of teams like this that work well. But at the same time I come across many teams that I would describe in the same way, but that don't work well. So why are they different.
I think it comes down to what they are working on and how they are working. I don't mean that because they are working on renovating a house they are working well, what I do mean is that they are all working on the same thing at the same time, they can see what each other are doing or are not doing, they can help each other and so on.
Generally speaking the teams that don't work well are the ones that have specific roles in different locations.
In other words - generally people like working with others on one thing with every body chipping in at the same time. Having the other things like a good boss helps as well..
The workers know their place and happily get on with the jobs assigned.
